Shopify image sizes at a glance
- Product images: 2048 × 2048 (square recommended; Shopify supports up to 5000 × 5000 and 20 MB per file).
- Collection images: 2048 × 2048 square keeps grids aligned with product photos.
- Slideshow / banner images: 2048 × 1024 is a safe wide standard; keep text and products in the centre because themes crop aggressively on mobile.
- Blog featured images: 2048 × 1024.
- Logo: a transparent PNG, sized to your theme’s header setting.
Product image rules that matter
- Use one consistent shape across the catalogue — square is the Shopify convention — so collection pages line up.
- Keep every product photo at least 800 pixels so zoom works well; 2048 gives you headroom for retina screens.
- Compress before upload: heavy photos are a top cause of slow stores. Around 85% JPG quality is the usual sweet spot.
- Name files descriptively before uploading (linen-shirt-blue-front.jpg) — Shopify uses filenames and alt text for image search.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best image size for Shopify products?
2048 × 2048 pixels, square. It is Shopify’s recommended size, zooms cleanly, and keeps every grid in your store aligned.
What is the maximum image size Shopify allows?
Up to 5000 × 5000 pixels or 20 MB per image. Bigger is not better for products — past 2048 you mostly gain file weight, not visible quality.
Why do my Shopify images look different sizes?
Because the source photos have different aspect ratios and your theme displays them in fixed frames. Batch-resizing everything to one square size before upload fixes it permanently.
